No ano de 1204 na Espanha, nasceu Raimundo Nonato. Desde criança Raimundo já tinha inclinação para a vida religiosa, mas seu pai não gostava da idéia; ele até mandou Raimundo trabalhar na roça, na roça havia uma pequena Capela dedicada a São Nicolau, onde tinha uma imagem de Nossa Senhora. Lá Raimundo rezava todos os dias; ele até pediu que Nossa Senhora o adotasse como filho e sempre pedia a Deus que o iluminasse, para que pudesse manter sempre a sua vocação.Raimundo tinha um grande amigo chamado Pedro Nolasco. Pedro fundou a Ordem de Nossa Senhora das Mercês, cujo objetivo era libertar os cristãos do cativeiro imposto pelos Mouros. Essa Ordem ficou conhecida como: Ordem dos Mercedários.Raimundo foi a Barcelona, tomar o hábito da Ordem de Nossa Senhora das Mercês. Um dia Raimundo sentiu o forte chamado de Deus. Então juntou-se a um grupo dos Mercedários, e partiu para África. Lá conseguiram libertar para mais de 150 cristãos.Raimundo até se fez prisioneiro, trocou sua liberdade pela liberdade de outras pessoas. Sofreu muito na prisão, porque dentro da mesma ele continuava a pregar a Palavra de Deus; ele incentivava os prisioneiros a não perder a fé. Por causa disso ele foi torturado; furaram os lábios e puseram um cadeado em sua boca. Ele ficou no cativeiro durante 8 meses.O Papa Gregório IX nomeou Raimundo Nonato cardeal da Igreja. Raimundo nunca aceitou esse título e menos residir nos palácios episcopais. Ele gostava mesmo era de viver na humildade entre seus irmãos de Ordem e junto aos empobrecidos.Raimundo Nonato morreu no dia 31 de agosto de 1240, com 36 anos.São Raimundo Nonato é considerado o protetor das senhoras gestante.
